Boeing Co. said a Delta 2 rocket carrying five Iridium World Communications Ltd. satellites was launched successfully, 13 days after a Delta 3 rocket exploded. The Delta 2, built at Boeing’s facility in Huntington Beach, is a slightly smaller version of the Delta 3 rocket, which exploded on its first flight Aug. 26, destroying a PanAmSat Corp. satellite. The launch is intended to keep the Iridium global communication network on schedule to start service Sept. 23 and avoid further delays in Boeing’s Delta program.
