Mission Viejo Rallies to Win in Water Polo
Mission Viejo rallied from a two-goal, fourth-quarter deficit to defeat visiting Santa Margarita, 7-6, in a nonleague boys’ water polo game Tuesday.
Mission Viejo scored three consecutive goals, and Carl Ulrich’s score with 57 seconds left gave the Diablos (5-4) the lead for good. Sophomore goalkeeper Sean Maroney made a save with four seconds remaining to preserve the victory.
Santa Margarita scored the first four goals of the second half to take the lead, 6-4, in the fourth quarter before Mission Viejo rallied.
In other nonleague games:
No. 5 San Clemente 13, No. 6 Los Alamitos 8--Josh Hewko scored four first-half goals for the visiting Tritons (5-3). Trevor Wawrzynski scored three goals for Los Alamitos (4-3).
No. 8 University 16, Buena Park 10--Nate Huebsch and Alex Taborek each scored three goals for host University (11-2).
Bell Gardens 18, Katella 16--Jeff Pratt scored six goals for host Katella (6-1), but Bell Gardens (7-1) broke a 16-16 tie with a minute left and went on to win.
Capistrano Valley 9, Costa Mesa 7--Ryan Keating scored five goals to lead Capistrano Valley (3-3). Goalkeeper Sean Wilson, who entered the game at the half, put the Cougars up, 7-6, at the end of the third quarter, scoring on a length-of-the-pool shot.
Corona del Mar 18, Lakewood 1--Garrett Gentry scored six goals, three in the first quarter, for host Corona del Mar (5-4).
Edison 18, Tustin 7--Kyle Tague had nine goals and three steals for visiting Edison (4-5).
Saddleback 14, Sunny Hills 2--Julian Gonzalez scored seven goals for visiting Saddleback (7-0).
In Sunset League field hockey:
Edison 4, Santa Ana 1--Nicole Harrison scored two goals to lead Edison (5-0). Anna Caceres scored for Santa Ana (1-3-1), the first goal scored against Edison this season.
In Empire League girls’ tennis:
Cypress 18, Kennedy 3--Michelle Kuo and Natalie Martinez won in doubles, 6-2, 6-1, for Cypress (8-0, 1-0). Martinez also won her singles set, 6-3.
In the Garden Grove League:
Pacifica 18, La Quinta 0--Junior Rashi Kesawani swept in singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, to improve 21-0 this season for host Pacifica (7-0, 3-0).
In the Olympic League:
St. Margaret’s 9, Calvary Chapel 9 (St. Margaret’s wins on games, 82-75)--Allison Austin swept in singles, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, for host St. Margaret’s (3-2, 2-0). Calvary Chapel is 2-4, 1-1.
In nonleague matches:
Palos Verdes Peninsula 11, Newport Harbor 7--Natalie Braverman won two of three singles sets for visiting Newport Harbor, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, in the loss to Peninsula (5-0), ranked second in the Southern Section Division I. Newport Harbor (5-2) is ranked fourth.
Santa Margarita 10, Laguna Beach 8--Erin Miller swept in singles, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0, for host Santa Margarita (4-2).
Mission Viejo 15, Huntington Beach 3--Bonnie Bachelor swept, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, and Amanda Poynter swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for Mission Viejo (7-1). Bachelor and Poynter have lost only one set each this season.
