Golden West Upsets Lasers in Men’s Soccer

Golden West scored two first-half goals and handed Irvine Valley only its second loss, 2-1, in an Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer game Tuesday at Golden West College.

Graig Chow scored off Paul Mwierza’s assist in the eighth minute and Golden West (4-2-2, 1-1 in conference) added an own goal in the 28th minute. Goalkeeper Evert Arevalo had nine saves for the Rustlers.

Chris Whitworth scored in the 69th minute for Irvine Valley (10-2, 1-1), which gave up only one goal in its first 11 games.

In other conference games:

Fullerton 5, Orange Coast 3--Kenny Takaki scored twice for Fullerton (4-4-3, 2-0). Orange Coast is 5-4-3, 1-1.

Santa Ana 7, Riverside 0--Alex Garcia scored three goals for visiting Santa Ana (9-1-1, 1-0).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s soccer:

Golden West 1, Irvine Valley 0--Melissa Bunim scored in the 32nd minute and reserve goalkeeper Sarah Martin posted her second consecutive shutout for visiting Golden West (6-3, 2-0).

Orange Coast 7, Fullerton 0--Freshman Taylor Yurada scored four goals for host Orange Coast (5-3-2. 2-0). Fullerton is 4-5, 0-2.
