Royal’s Segal May Be ‘Scrawny’ But His Scoring Average Is Beefy
His coach describes him as a physically unimpressive player who is “kind of on the scrawny side.” But there is no denying that Adam Segal of Royal High is an offensive force.
Segal, a 6-foot-1 senior guard who transferred from Malibu last year, is averaging 26.4 points for the Highlanders (3-5) after scoring 37, 34 and 28 points in the final three games of the Valencia tournament last week.
“His demeanor is so quiet and unassuming that you wouldn’t think he’s the guy scoring all those points,” Coach Larry Wiksell said. “But he has a move that you can’t teach as a coach. He can go to his left or right, elevate high and shoot a really soft jump shot.”
Segal, one of five Royal players held out of a first-round loss to Lynwood because of disciplinary reasons, attended Simi Valley as a freshman and sophomore before transferring to Malibu as a junior to live with his father.
He played in some tournament games for the Sharks, but moved back to Simi Valley to live with his mother after his father was killed in a car accident.
“He didn’t want to go back to Simi Valley [High], so he came here,” Wiksell said. “I’m sure he’s still dealing with the loss [of his father], but it’s hard to tell how he’s doing because he’s a real quiet kid.”
