VALLEY VALEDICTORIANS
Each year, high school student who lead their classes in the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys are honored as valedictorians. A variety of criteria are used to choose the students, but basically, they are the best and brightest at their schools. Several of them share their thoughts as they embark on their journeys into adulthood.
Michelle Arenas, Glendale
School: Holy Family High
GPA: 4.4
College: Mount St. Mary’s College
Career goal: pediatrician
“I have mixed emotions about leaving high school. It’s a nervous excitement. I’m glad to be leaving, yet I’m kind of depressed about it. You have to leave the friends you’ve made and move on to something else. I don’t think I’m quite ready, but it’s a step I need to take. After a few months, I’m sure it will be easier. I’m an only child, which makes it more difficult. . . . Mount St. Mary’s is a small campus, and I like the personal aspect of it. When you go to a big school, they don’t even know you. You feel more comfortable at a small school. If I don’t understand something, I can go up and ask the teacher. . . . I’ve been living only with my mom since I was born. She’s the inspiration in my life. She’s the sister I never had. She’s everything to me.”

Robert Ly, Tujunga
School: Verdugo Hills High
GPA: 4.34
College: UCLA
Career goal: undecided, leaning toward math and science
“Right after school, I go to work at my parents’ doughnut shop in Echo Park. On the weekends, I work from morning until 11 at night, for a total of 50 to 60 hours a week. I do my homework when I get home. I can do some studying at work, but not much. Sometimes I need to study, and sometimes I just understand from class. My parents were born in China, then moved to Cambodia and came here when I was born. They wanted a better life. I’ve been working for them since I was a little kid. I think it’s good for me. I’m experiencing what real life really is, trying to juggle friends and work. Working has made me work harder in school. I can’t let anyone stop me. I don’t regret anything. It made me who I am.”
*
Edward Mundy, Los Angeles
School: Chatsworth High
GPA: 4.21
College: Yale University
Career goal: politician
“For the past seven years, I’ve been riding the bus from L.A. to go to schools in the Valley. It started out as my mother’s decision. She recognized how good a student I was and wanted me to get the best education I could. But as the years went by, it really was my decision. I get home a lot later than people in my neighborhood. And it’s hard in the morning, waking up at 5:30 every day. It’s an hour to school and an hour and a half to get home. I want to go to law school and eventually enter some kind of work in government or politics. I want to work to improve the schools, something to help out my community. I’m the first in my family to go to college. It makes me feel proud, knowing that my whole family is behind me and praying for me.”

Philip Lee, Northridge
School: North Hollywood High
GPA: 4.315
College: Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Career goal: medical research
“I wanted to go to college far away for the experience and the opportunity to start over. But now that graduation is here, it’s starting to hit me that things are going to be different. . . . I’ve spent four years at [North Hollywood High’s] Zoo Magnet. I chose it partly out of chance because it’s science-based. I always knew I wasn’t going to be a veterinarian. After a year or two, I found it was really a great place to go. . . . I’ve put in 1,500 volunteer hours over the past two years doing microbiology work on HIV at a UCLA lab. If I had had a minimum-wage job, I could have saved enough money to buy a car by now. But this way, I can actually say I’m helping to find a cure for AIDS.

Janet Javaheri, Tarzana
School: Birmingham High
GPA: 4.075
College: UCLA
Career goal: lawyer
“I’ll be starting UCLA as a junior in the fall. In college, there’s a lot more freedom, as opposed to high school. You do things for yourself. If you don’t want to survive, no one is going to stop and help you. I like the college atmosphere. You’re treated like an adult, because it’s up to you. You know your limits and how hard you have to work. I’ve been attending Pierce College and Santa Monica City College since 10th grade. Hopefully, I will graduate UCLA at 20 years old. I’m the kind of person that if I don’t have something to do, I will be bored. I like to be productive. My parents came from Iran about 20 years ago with nothing. I want to take their sacrifice and make it into something. They came here to make this possible for me.”
