Phan, Garden Grove Start Badminton Season With Easy Victory

Le Phan swept both her singles matches to lead Garden Grove to a 15-4 victory over Loara in a nonleague badminton match Wednesday at Garden Grove.

Phan defeated Loara’s Nini Mai, 11-2, 11-0, then got past Tanya Seneriches, 11-0, 11-2. Trong Nguyen lost a close opening boys’ singles match against Sothea Kiet, 15-14, 13-15, 11-15, then defeated Son Le, 15-4, 15-3.

Garden Grove, expected to dominate Southern Section badminton, opens its season 1-0.

In nonleague boys’ golf:

Brea Olinda 188, Sunny Hills 198--Jason Woodrome shot one-over-par 35 for Brea Olinda (1-0). Dusty Schmidt also shot 36 for Sunny Hills.

Santa Barbara San Marcos 360, Servite 364, Westlake 379--Servite’s Nico Bollini was medalist, shooting three-under 67 for the Friars at Santa Barbara Golf Club in the match between three perennial Southern Section golf powers.

El Toro 391, Capistrano Valley 422--Donald Rhee had four birdies and shot two-under 70 for El Toro (1-1) at the El Toro Marine Base.

Mater Dei 183, Westminster 232--Brian McKnight and Justin Patterson each shot an even-par 35 to lead the Monarchs (1-0) to the victory at Meadowlark Golf Club.

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Troy 109, Brea Olinda 55--Brandon Secrest of Troy swam two Southern Section qualifying times to open his season. The junior won the 200 freestyle (1 minute 50.02 seconds) and the 500 freestyle (5:05.86).

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Garden Grove 105, Santa Ana Valley 71--Garden Grove won two of the three relays to help give the Argonauts the edge.

Cory Horwitz had an impressive win in the 200 individual medley, winning the event by half the length of the pool in a time of 2:51.84.

Liz Zuliani led a top three finish for Garden Grove in the 50 freestyle (28.71).

Troy 93, Brea Olinda 76--Mary Haynes, a senior, qualified in two Southern Section events as she won events in the 200 freestyle (2:00.19) and the 500 freestyle (5:21.55).

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Capistrano Valley 13, Aliso Niguel 5--Mike Nguyen of Capistrano Valley swept his sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2. The Cougars improved to 2-0 while Aliso Niguel dropped to 1-1.

Katella 11, Buena Park 10--It wasn’t enough that Jimmy Ly and Luis Rangel won their singles sets, they then teamed together to win the deciding sets in doubles, 6-3, 6-4, to provide Katella (1-1) with its first victory.

Irvine 9, Edison 9 (Irvine wins on tiebreaker, 8-6)--Irvine and Edison tied in sets and games, 67-67, forcing a tiebreaker that was one by Irvine’s Bobby Yan and Theo Paw, 8-6.

Jaideep Dore swept in singles, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1, for Irvine (1-0).

Pacifica 16, Fairmont 2--Howie Konishi, Ryan Patrick and Steven Ly swept in singles for Pacifica (1-0).

Mission Viejo 10, Laguna Hills 8--Mission Viejo’s No. 3 singles player, Chase Pearce, scored a critical victory when he defeated Laguna Hills’ top player, Jon Kuai, in a tiebreaker, 8-6, to help the Diablos win their first game of the season.

Nymma Shemirani swept his three sets in singles without losing a game for Mission Viejo(1-1).

Santa Margarita 14, Esperanza 4--Santa Margarita’s Robbie Lamour won a tiebreaker against Jeff Cohen, 7-4, then finished the sweep with 6-4, 6-1 victories.

Michael Hsu and Trevor Ware also swept, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3, for the Eagles, who were victorious in their season opener.

University 16, Palm Desert 2--Host University routed visiting Palm Desert as No. 2 singles player Aaron Yovan swept his sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. University is 1-1.

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

Capistrano Valley 3, Corona del Mar 1--Kevin Frantz had 21 kills, Paul Johnson had 15 kills and Jarrod Metchikoff led the defese with seven blocks for Capistrano Valley (1-0), which won, 9-15, 15-8, 15-8, 15-6.

Valencia 3, Garden Grove 0--Allan Triiplett had eight kills as Valencia scored an easy sweep against the Argonauts, 15-11, 15-1, 15-4.
