The city is free of any red fire ant infestations, according to Bruce Wegner, director of the Department of Beaches, Parks and Recreation.
However, he said any future infestations would best be handled on a regional level.
Wegner said the city can handle isolated fire ant sightings with conventional insect control methods but is asking residents who spot a fire ant colony within San Clemente to contact the state Department of Food and Agriculture at (800) 491-1899.
