Zavala Helps Salvage Littlerock Victory
Jose Zavala scored six of his 18 points in overtime and Littlerock High beat host Barstow, 70-63, in a nonleague game on Monday.
Littlerock (1-0), ranked No. 8 by The Times, blew a five-point lead in the final minute of regulation.
Gene Myvett scored 38 points to outduel Barstow’s James Shivers, who made six three-pointers and finished with 30 points.
Grant 74, San Fernando 62--Ryan Logan scored 17 points and the host Lancers held off a late rally by the visiting Tigers (0-1).
San Fernando’s Mike Hernandez scored 28 points, including 21 in the fourth quarter.
Buckley 118, Glendale Adventist 44--Colin Ward-Henninger scored 33 points and the Griffins (1-0) set a school record for scoring in a nonleague game at Buckley.
Hueneme 48, Ventura 42--Frank Thompson scored 20 points to lead the Vikings (1-0) at Ventura.
Lincoln 56, Verdugo Hills 53--Kevin Baird scored 22 points with 18 rebounds but the host Dons (0-1) lost a nonleague game.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Monroe 74, Poly 23--Shakaria Jones had 22 points, 10 assists and eight steals for the Vikings despite sitting out much of the second half in a nonleague season opener at Poly.
Danisha Jasper added 14 points for Monroe.
Westlake 52, Rio Mesa 44--Tawny Thorp scored 22 points and the Warriors (1-0) made 13 of 18 free throws in a nonleague game at Westlake.
Littlerock 48, Barstow 35--Jolene Haywood scored 10 points and the host Lobos (1-0) won a nonleague game.
Burroughs 63, South Pasadena 34--Danica Cunningham scored 14 points, Esther Thompson had 10 rebounds and the Indians (1-0) won a nonleague game at South Pasadena.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Buena 5, Agoura 0--Chris Parkin had a goal and an assist to lead the Bulldogs (1-0) in a nonleague game at Agoura (0-1).
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Hueneme 6, Santa Paula 0--Jhona Mejia scored two goals to lead the Vikings (1-0) at Santa Paula.
