Board Rescinds OK of Newhall Ranch Project

Responding to a court decision earlier this year, the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday withdrew its approval of the largest residential development in Los Angeles County history, the Newhall Ranch project in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Ventura County had sued Los Angeles County to block the 21,000-unit development on the county line near the Santa Clara River. The Los Angeles County supervisors’ move Tuesday complies with the orders of a Kern County Superior Court judge who heard the case and ruled that the environmental impact of the project needs further scrutiny.

The board’s action withdraws part of its approval of the environmental impact report that would have authorized construction. Now the county must demonstrate there is sufficient water available for the project and analyze the development’s impact on Ventura County traffic.
