Well, at Least This BCS Thing Has People Talking

For those who are whining about the apparent BCS snub of Oregon State, keep in mind that its nonconference victories were over Eastern Washington, New Mexico and San Diego State. Oregon’s nonconference victories were over Nevada and Idaho.

It’s pretty obvious that, with the exception of some good nonconference wins by Washington and UCLA, the out-of-conference record of Pac-10 schools is tainted, and not that impressive.

The formula for BCS rankings is missing an important measurement--drawing power. Add a team’s ability to draw a television audience and give it proper weight in the formula. Suddenly, Notre Dame plays for the national championship year in and year out. When are people going to understand? It all comes down to money!

The Pac-10’s threat to pull out of the BCS after 2006 is as toothless as most Pac-10 defenses. Efforts to match college football’s two top teams in a championship game would be threatened very little by a Pac-10 retreat to the Rose Bowl, particularly if the Big Ten would not join them in such a childish withdrawal.

The Pac-10 should focus its energy on making its teams so attractive (i.e. consistent winners with loyal fans) that the BCS bowls could not afford to overlook them, rather than complaining that one year’s success is treated as the aberration that it is.
