Moorpark Advances Behind Lyons

Kellie Lyons had 10 kills and Moorpark College defeated Santa Rosa, 15-11, 15-9, 15-10, in the first round of the women’s volleyball state championships on Friday at Delta College in Stockton.
Lyons, a freshman middle blocker, had six digs and two blocks.
Carina Nusinov of Moorpark (22-1) had nine kills.
Moorpark plays seven-time defending champion Golden West (24-0) today in the double-elimination tournament.
In another first-round match:
Ventura def. Delta, 15-12, 15-8, 15-5--Jenille Boston had 12 kills, Jen Corral had 10 and Kathleen Solomon had 38 assists for Ventura (19-3).
The Pirates play Long Beach City (20-0) today.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Antelope Valley 87, Canyons 79--Bo Segeberg scored 37 points and the Marauders (4-6) overcame a seven-point halftime deficit in a consolation game of the Antelope Valley tournament.
Jimmy White added 17 points.
Nana Gbewonyo led Canyons with 29 points and 14 rebounds.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Valley 73, Ohlone 35--Michelle Thompkins had 21 points and Lily Ramirez had 19 points and 11 rebounds for Valley (5-4) in a consolation game of the Sequoias tournament.
Antelope Valley 85, Monterey 66--Kristel Jones had 16 points, Jameka Taylor had 10 points and Ebony Sullivan had 11 points for Antelope Valley (5-4) in a consolation game of the Cuesta tournament.
WRESTLING
Junior College state championships--Defending champion Moorpark advanced seven wrestlers to the semifinals and trailed Fresno City, 69-66 1/2, after the first day of competition at Golden West College.
Shannon Sams of Moorpark defeated Patrick Clough of Sierra, 10-4, at 174 pounds in the first round and later defeated Bakersfield’s Shamar Pigg in overtime.
