Hearing Set on Plan for Charter School
The Newport-Mesa Unified School District board has scheduled a public hearing for 6 p.m. Tuesday in the District Education Center to allow the public an opportunity to discuss the charter school proposal submitted by parents last month.
Proponents of the Mesa Leadership Academy hope to open the academy in September, with about 320 students in kindergarten through third grade. The addition of fourth and fifth grades would be planned over the next two years.
Charter schools are public institutions usually organized by local groups of parents, teachers or community leaders. Such schools’ goals and operating procedures are detailed in an agreement, or “charter,” with the local school board.
The District Education Center is at 2985-A Bear St., Costa Mesa.
