Dons Win Third Straight Soccer Title
Santa Ana became the first California community college to win three consecutive state titles in men’s soccer, defeating Orange Coast, 3-0, in the final Sunday at Lemoore Sports Complex near Fresno.
Santa Ana also became the first team to win five state championships. It was the Dons’ fourth title in six years under Coach J.P Frutos. Their first title was in 1978, before Frutos took over the program.
Elias Ferrel, the tournament MVP, scored two of his three tournament goals in the championship match. His first came in the 17th minute off an assist from Mauro Barron. He put the Dons ahead, 2-0, with a goal in the 48th minute off a pass from Oscar Retiz. Roberto Fuentes capped the scoring with six minutes remaining.
Hillario Arriaga had eight saves for Orange Coast (19-4-4), which was the only team to defeat Santa Ana (21-1-4) this season. The Dons outshot the Pirates, 19-5.
