Veterans Service Officer Selected
George Compton has been named the county’s new veterans service officer, officials with the Human Services Agency announced Monday.
Compton, previously the agency’s veterans claims officer, was selected after a statewide search. County officials said Compton’s dedication to the department made him the clear choice to fill the slot.
“Mr. Compton’s education, experience, comportment and vision for the Veterans Service Office made him the ideal selection,” Barbara Fitzgerald of the Human Services Agency said in a news release Monday.
Compton is a retired colonel with the Army, who left the service in 1993 after 23 years. During his service time, Compton acted as president of the Physical Evaluation Board, which reviewed disabilities for active personnel. He earned the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.
Compton, a Ventura native, was a member of the first graduating class of Buena High School. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree in business administration from the Florida Institute of Technology.
