Senior Michael Washington of Paraclete surpassed 2,000 all-purpose yards for the season in the Spirits’ 22-6 victory over Kern Valley in a Division XII semifinal on Friday.

Washington, who will be playing in his fourth consecutive section title game on Saturday night against Montclair Prep at Valley College, has 2,117 all-purpose yards after rushing for 105 yards in eight carries, catching three passes for 51 yards and returning one punt for 52 yards against Kern Valley.

Cornerback John Taylor of Paraclete is expected to play against Montclair Prep after straining his right shoulder in the first defensive series against Kern Valley.

Taylor, a 5-foot-11, 156-pound junior, was dressed in street clothes with his right arm wrapped tightly against his body at the conclusion of Friday’s game, but Coach Jeff Cortez expects him to suit up against Montclair Prep.

“We just wanted to make sure his shoulder was immobilized,” Cortez said. “It was a precautionary measure as much as anything.”

Glen Beattie, the coach at Flintridge Prep for 15 years, has stepped down from that position but will continue to teach science at the school.

“I’m just burned out,” said Beattie, 50. “I’m tired of everything. When you’re having fun, you don’t mind working until 8 every night and on the weekends. But when you’re not enjoying it, it just becomes another job.”

Beattie, who guided Flintridge Prep to a 96-60 record and the 1989 Eight-Man Large Schools title, informed administrators in September that he would retire at the end of the season.

The Rebels, who qualified for the playoffs in 14 of Beattie’s 15 seasons, were 7-4 this year and advanced to the Division XIII quarterfinals before losing to Arrowhead Christian, 41-3.
