Ventura finally ran out of steam at the women’s volleyball state championships in Stockton, but not without a fight.
The Pirates (20-5) lost to host Delta, 15-8, 15-11, 15-11, on Sunday and were knocked out of the double-elimination tournament.
Ventura placed fourth, behind Golden West (27-0), Long Beach City (22-2) and Delta (24-3). Golden West lost the first two games against Long Beach before rallying to win its eighth consecutive title and 92nd consecutive match.
Ventura could not get past Delta a second time in the tournament. They defeated the Mustangs in straight games in the first round on Friday, but Delta fought back through the losers’ bracket.
Moorpark (22-3) lost twice on Saturday and placed fifth in the eight-team tournament.

By winning the state wrestling title on Saturday for the second consecutive year, Moorpark is in line for a rare three-peat.
Only San Bernardino Valley from 1959-61 and El Camino from 1964-66 have won three state championships in a row.
Moorpark is tied with El Camino and Palomar with five state championships each. Fresno City is the all-time leader with seven and San Bernardino Valley has six, the last one in 1968.
