Notre Dame 59, Quartz Hill 57--Cody Pearson made two free throws with five seconds remaining to preserve the victory for the Knights in pool play at the Canyon tournament.

Pearson had 29 points and 11 rebounds and Derek Hennessy had 11 points for Notre Dame (1-0), which led, 36-20, at halftime.

Scott Leckford had 20 points for Quartz Hill (3-2).

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Granada Hills High teammates Jasmin Dao and Canna Furuta will meet in Wednesday’s singles quarterfinals of the City Section individual tournament after each recorded victories Monday at Balboa Recreation Center in Encino.

No. 3-seeded Dao blanked Verdugo Hills’ Roxy Ionescu, 6-0, 6-0, in the round of 16. No. 6-seeded Furuta beat Kim Espiritu of Carson, 6-0, 6-1.

No. 8-seeded Diana Friedland of Van Nuys won by a default over Palisades’ Lydia Chertov and will play top-seeded Judith De Vera of Carson. De Vera defeated Grant’s Shayna Fox, 6-0, 6-1.

No. 7-seeded Cindy Yim of Cleveland advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 rout of Huntington Park’s Irma Farfan.
