Great Teams

A selection of top teams from Irvine’s football history:

1991--After seven seasons in the second division of the South Coast League, Irvine won the first league title in school history, scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to defeat Capistrano Valley, 17-13, in the regular-season finale. The Vaqueros then avenged their only league loss, defeating Dana Hills, 22-11, in the Division II championship game behind Jason Minici’s 216 yards passing.

1992--Irvine and Newport Harbor hooked up in the first all-Sea View League final, but it wasn’t close. The Vaqueros entered on an 11-game winning streak, having swept their league schedule, and steamrollered Newport Harbor, 30-8. Aron Garcia, who five years before had been the starting pitcher in a Little League World Series championship game, completed 17 of 23 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns to spark Irvine.

1993--The Vaqueros became only the second school in county history to win three consecutive Southern Section titles and capped a three-year 38-4 run by knocking off Canyon Springs, 41-10, in the Division IV final. Even without any all-county players on the roster, Irvine averaged 34 points a game, losing only a seven-point decision to Fountain Valley.
