Cyberspace Capsule
For sale: Limited edition Soyuz space capsule, brown, with air, deluxe navigation system and other extras. Used only once. $2.2 million or best offer, rocket not included.
Space Media Inc. is selling one of the three-seater spacecraft used to travel to and from space station Mir. It’s the latest piece of Russian memorabilia to go on the block.
The 2.8-ton Soyuz TM26 Descent Capsule spent 198 days in space in 1997 and early 1998, most of them tethered to the wobbly Mir as Russian cosmonauts and U.S. astronauts struggled to repair the damaged station.
The only thing historic about this particular Soyuz is that it was on the scene when cosmonauts Anatoly Soloviev and Pavel Vinogradov made an all-or-nothing spacewalk to save the battered Mir. Their mission succeeded, and the Mir lives on, although probably not for long.
Prospective buyers take note: The bulbous Soyuz is more than 7 feet in diameter and about 7 feet tall, so it won’t fit through the front door. Delivery, however, is included.
