The partially clad body of a young woman washed ashore in Newport Beach early Friday, authorities said.
An autopsy indicated that the woman drowned about two hours before a beachcomber found her at about 7 a.m., said Newport Beach Police Lt. Doug Fletcher.
“We don’t know if it’s an accident, a suicide or a homicide,” Fletcher said. “Until we have further information, we have to proceed under the worst-case scenario and proceed as if it is a homicide.”
Authorities said the woman was white, in her 20s, 5 feet 7 and 138 pounds, with brown hair. She was wearing only blue jeans. She had four piercings in her right ear and three in her left ear, authorities said.
Investigators ask that anyone with information about the woman’s identity or the incident call Newport Beach Police at (800) 550-NBPD.
