Storms Leave 13 Dead in Region
At least 13 people died in storms that battered the flank of Western Europe, bringing fresh floods and chaos to thousands of people, authorities and news reports said. Nine people died in Spain and Portugal on Thursday and Friday as strong winds toppled trees and snapped power lines and swollen rivers burst their banks and swamped roads. The storm moved on to Britain, where torrential rain and strong winds left four people dead and brought more misery to thousands already devastated by last month’s severe flooding. The rain and heavy winds are expected to pound northern England and Scotland into the weekend.
