Division XI Scouting Report
ST. BONAVENTURE vs. ORANGE LUTHERAN
at VENTURA HIGH, 7:30 p.m.
THE BREAKDOWN
Observations by Coach Ed Gomez of Santa Paula, which lost to Orange Lutheran, 19-16, in the quarterfinals. Gomez scouted St. Bonaventure:
“With Orange Lutheran, the option is the big thing. You have to play assignment defense and read the play. They have two quarterbacks and when [Jason] Taylor’s in the game running the option, you have to key on him and rough him up. St. Bonaventure is capable of doing that.
“Orange Lutheran is big up front, but not as big as St. Bonaventure. If you pound them on the option, they bring in another quarterback to throw. You just can’t let [Orange Lutheran] get in a rhythm, because they can move the ball. Jon Talmage is a talented receiver.
“St. Bonaventure is going to control the ball with [Lorenzo] Booker. Orange Lutheran has some linebackers who pursue well, and they have a big line, so they’ll occupy the offensive line and let the backers make the plays. I think the passing game will be the difference for St. Bonaventure. They give [Jack Swisher] time to throw and Orange Lutheran will probably be bringing their safeties up a lot to stop the run, so St. Bonaventure will probably get some big plays with the pass.”
