Czechs, Austria to End Dispute Over Nuclear Plant

MELK, Austria — The Czech Republic and Austria agreed Wednesday on measures to resolve a bitter dispute over a Czech nuclear power plant that Vienna says may not be safe.
Anti-nuclear activists blocked border crossings between the two countries last month to protest the plant at Temelin, 30 miles from the Austrian border.
Environmental groups expressed skepticism about the accord, with Greenpeace activists warning against “gullible euphoria” and Global 2000 calling the agreement “window dressing.”
The accord calls for European Union experts to conduct a comprehensive safety examination of the plant, which began test operations in October.
The two nations also agreed to establish a hotline between Vienna and Prague and an early-warning system to detect possible safety problems.
