Liberties Trump Personal Biases

* Re: “City May Take Benefits From Gay Partners,” (Dec. 5).
Maybe someone should remind the Mission Viejo City Council that Gail Reavis’ personal beliefs (“I just don’t believe in the homosexual lifestyle”) are not the basis for the way a city should conduct itself in a nation founded on the preservation of life and liberty.
This may seem like a small thing, but oppression begins by using personal beliefs to shape communities.
If it’s OK to penalize someone for having a same-sex partner, later it will be easier to accept discrimination for a difference in faith or some other thing Reavis or another council person can’t “believe” in.
American and world history has taught us the moral and social danger of policies of discrimination.
