PLAYER OF THE YEAR Monica Wiesener, Calabasas, Freshman
FIRST TEAM
Singles
Jasmin Dao, Granada Hills
Senior
The No. 1 player for the City Section runner-up, Dao posted a 20-3 record and advanced to the third-place match of the City individual tournament for the second consecutive season, losing to Charlana Brown of L.A. CES, 6-3, 6-1. Dao, The Times’ regional player of the year in 1999, is ranked No. 46 in Southern California girls’ 18s.
Erin Everly, Calabasas
Sophomore
Everly, a second-team selection last season, went 63-4, helping the Coyotes to a 21-1 record and the Southern Section Division IV championship match for the third consecutive season. Everly was the Frontier League singles runner-up to Wiesener after winning the title in 1999.
Jessica Leck, Harvard-Westlake
Junior
Leck was the No. 1 player for Harvard-Westlake most of the season and won the singles title in a competitive Mission League tournament after being the runner-up last season. She helped the Wolverines to a 16-7 record and a berth in the Division IV semifinals, where they lost to Calabasas.
Doubles
Caryn Linder/Shannon Slotnick, Granada Hills
Senior/Senior
Among the most successful doubles players in region history, Linder and Slotnick won the City Section title for the second consecutive season. Slotnick was a doubles finalist with Valerie Ramirez as a sophomore and Linder finished thirdas a freshman with Karen Fung.
Celia Durkin/Andrea Leewong, Calabasas
Freshman/Senior
Durkin, ranked No. 13 in the girls’ 14 division in Southern California by the USTA, played No. 2 or No. 3 singles for the Coyotes and was 51-0, including team playoffs. She and Leewong won the Frontier League doubles title and reached the quarterfinals in the Southern Section individual tournament--further than any other team in the region. Leewong played No. 1 doubles with Jackie Yano during the regular season and was 59-1.
Michelle Alvarez/Lauren Gaona, Camarillo
Senior/Senior
After competing in singles most of the season--Gaona was 45-5 at No. 1 and Alvarez was 46-7 at No. 2--the seniors won the Pacific View League doubles title. They finished 9-2 and reached the round of the 16 in the Southern Section doubles tournament. Alvarez and Gaona helped the Scorpions (16-4) win the league title and reach the second round of the Division I playoffs.
SECOND TEAM
Singles
Stephanie Berg, Harvard-Westlake
Senior
A first-team selection last season, Berg played only part-time for the Wolverines this season. Ranked No. 44 in girls’ 18 in Southern California, she played a crucial part in Harvard-Westlake’s surge to the Division IV semifinals.
Daron Moore, Campbell Hall
Freshman
The No. 1 player for Division V quarterfinalist Campbell Hall (14-3), Moore was 50-1 in regular-season round-robin sets, losing only to Cate School’s Lori Stern, the No. 3-ranked player in the girls’ 16 division in Southern California. Moore lost to Everly in the second round of the Southern Section tournament.
Cheyenne Reveche, Campbell Hall
Freshman
Reveche played No. 2 for the Vikings but was virtually interchangeable with Moore, going 52-2 in regular-season round-robin sets and getting to the second round of the section individual tournament.
Doubles
Shilpa Madhavan/Katelyn Rader, Harvard-Westlake
Sophomore/Junior
The top team for the Division IV semifinalists, Madhavan and Rader were among the most reliable players in a lineup that changed nearly every match.
Tracey Takeshita/Andrea Blieden, Granada Hills
Sophomore/Senior
Takeshita, who reached the round of 16 in City singles as a freshman, made a successful transition to doubles. She and Blieden advanced to the City Section championship match, losing to Linder and Slotnick. Blieden finished third with Jennifer Steinberg in the 1999 City doubles tournament.
Kathryn Meister/Stephanie Matthews, La Reina
Junior/Sophomore
Meister claimed her third consecutive Tri-Valley League doubles title, teaming with Matthews, the 1999 league singles champion. Meister played the previous two seasons with older sister Erin. Meister and Matthews played singles in the regular season, with Meister going 30-15 in sets and Matthews 37-14.
