HOPE FOR SHAUN KING
Also known among the NFL quarterback fraternity as the Just Get Out Of Tampa Bay Factor . . .
1. DOUG WILLIAMS--Quarterbacked Buccaneers from 1978-82. Was so depressed, he jumped to the USFL in 1983. Signed with Washington after USFL folded in 1985, quarterbacked Redskins to 1987 NFC title, then to a Super Bowl-record 35 points in one quarter, then picked up the Super Bowl XXII MVP trophy.
2. STEVE YOUNG--Quarterbacked Buccaneers in 1985 and ‘86, both of them 2-14 seasons. Next stop: San Francisco. Stop after that: Super Bowl XXIV, member of winning team. Stop after that: Super Bowl XXIX, voted game’s MVP. Stop after that: Canton, Ohio.
3. CHRIS CHANDLER--Quarterbacked Buccaneers 1990 and ’91. Moved on to Arizona, then Anaheim, then Houston, then Atlanta, where he quarterbacked Falcons to 14-2 record in 1998 and their only Super Bowl appearance.
4. VINNY TESTAVERDE--Quarterbacked Buccaneers from 1987-92, written off as yet another Heisman winner who failed in the pros. Moved to Cleveland, then the New York Jets, with whom he went 12-4 in 1998 before blowing out his Achilles’ in 1999. Still in the 2000 playoff hunt without a receiver named Keyshawn Johnson, Al Toon or Don Maynard.
5. TRENT DILFER--Quarterbacked Buccaneers from 1994-99, eventually lost starting job to Shaun King. Stock plummeted so far, he began 2000 season backing up Tony Banks in Baltimore. Now starting again and headed to the playoffs on a team that, wisely enough, has purchased the best defensive talent in football.
