President Calls for Unity Behind EU Bid

President Aleksander Kwasniewski urged Poles to reach beyond political divisions to help their nation join the European Union. His plea came as he took the presidential oath for his second five-year term. Poland’s entry into the EU is a “historical target,” the highly popular Kwasniewski said in a brief inaugural address to the National Assembly. Poland, which led Eastern Europe in toppling communism and has become a leader in market reforms, has been pressing for EU entry as early as 2003.
