U.S. Soccer Tabs Rigamat, French

Stephanie Rigamat, a UCLA All-American and former All-Southern Section forward at Crescenta Valley High, and Michelle French, a former Chaminade standout, have been selected to the U.S. women’s national soccer team for games Jan. 11 and 14 in China.
Rigamat led UCLA to its first NCAA final this season with 13 goals, including the game-winner in the semifinal, and 11 assists. She redshirted in 1999 after transferring from UC Irvine, where she was two-time All-Big West Conference.
French, who played one season at Cal State Northridge, will play with Mia Hamm for the Washington Freedom in the WUSA pro league.
CROSS-COUNTRY
* The Ventura High girls’ team has finished third in the CIF scholastic state championships.
The program honors teams demonstrating the highest collective grade-point averages in their respective sports.
Ventura, which won its third consecutive Channel League title and finished seventh in the Southern Section Division II final last month, had a team GPA of 3.8 on a scale of 4.0.
BASEBALL
* A coaches’ clinic for youth coaches will be held Jan. 21 at Glendale’s Stengel Field at 1 p.m. The clinic is run by Coach Phil Torres of Crescenta Valley High. Cost is $5.
SOFTBALL
* The Gold Coast Officials Assn. will begin training sessions Jan. 16 in Camarillo.
No experience is necessary. Training is set for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 16 at Camarillo High, with a rules clinic at 8 a.m. Feb. 4 at Los Cerritos Middle School.
