El Toro Forfeits Wins in Two Sports

The El Toro boys’ basketball and football teams had to forfeit their first victories because of an administrative error, El Toro Athletic Director John Johansen said.
The Chargers’ basketball team, ranked No. 3 in the county and undefeated on the court this season, was forced to forfeit its 63-56 victory over Los Alamitos and the football team its 24-21 victory over Jurupa Valley in Week 3 after the Southern Section discovered it had not received forms completed by two athletes, Johansen said.
“It was a classic administrative error,” Johansen said. “We had some paperwork due and some forms were put in and others weren’t. When we discovered the error, we contacted the Southern Section and told them we were going to forfeit those first games.”
Said basketball Coach Todd Dixon: “It’s very unfortunate. We have two athletes who did everything right, but the administration failed to fax some forms. In our minds we are 14-0 with a forfeit. We didn’t lose the game.”
Johansen said he’s still trying to determine how the error occurred and hopes to establish better procedures for handling paperwork in the future.
“We thought we had a good system but it looks like we need to make some changes,” he said.
The Charger football team finished 2-8.
