Ebell Helps the West Ring Up 18-15 Victory

Tyler Ebell of Ventura High was the leading rusher with 77 yards in 19 carries to help the West win the inaugural National High School All-Star Football game, 18-15, over the East on Saturday at Highland Park High in Dallas.

Ebell and Cedric Houston of Clarendon (Arkansas) High split the rushing duties for the West.

“There were a lot of guys out there swiping at air,” Ebell said of the East defense. “I was confident that I would do well. I think they were surprised by my ability.”

Houston, who is being recruited by Tennessee, Nebraska and Mississippi, had 75 yards in 20 carries, including what proved to be the winning touchdown on a one-yard run with 10:49 remaining in the third quarter.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Transylvania 79, The Master’s 72--The Mustangs (9-7) squandered a first-half lead in a second-round loss in the Grand Canyon tournament in Phoenix.

Tyler Hoffman scored 18 points and Jay Armbruster had 14 for The Master’s, which made only 10 of 29 shots in the second half.

Eric Liedtke had 24 points for Transylvania (13-1).

San Diego Mesa 76, Glendale 75--Michael Schnyder missed a shot and the Vaqueros couldn’t get the rebound as time expired in the championship game of the San Diego Mesa tournament.

Schnyder made five three-pointers and finished with 28 points.

Nate Johnson of Glendale (12-6) missed a game-tying free throw with six seconds left.

Moorpark 81, L.A. Southwest 66--Lester Strong had 22 points and T.K. Reed had 14 points and 10 assists as the Raiders finished third in the San Jose City tournament.

Devin Montgomery had 16 points for Moorpark (12-4).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Lutheran 56, Concordia 42--Christina Mosesso had 11 points for the Regals (9-2) in a Cal Lutheran tournament consolation victory.
