* U.S. businesses announced plans to cut 50,655 jobs in January, down 36% from a year ago and making for the fifth consecutive month that the number of jobs planned to be eliminated declined, according to the survey by employment firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas. Food, health-care and aerospace/defense businesses planned to cut the greatest numbers of jobs last month, Challenger said.
