Ranger Rookie Upstages Bourque
Ray Bourque reached a milestone Friday night at New York, but a rookie stole the show.
Bourque got his 1,500th NHL point with a goal, but New York Ranger rookie Jan Hlavac scored three goals as the Rangers defeated the Boston Bruins, 5-2.
Bourque opened the scoring with a back-hander from 10 feet out that just slipped under Mike Richter’s shoulder two minutes and one second into the game.
Bourque, pleased to get his 1,500th point, said he was happier about the way he scored.
“I haven’t scored many from that position,” said Bourque, who has 393 goals and 1,107 assists in 1,509 games--all with the Bruins. “Most of my goals are from out further. I was more excited about the execution of the goal, and that it gave us a lead.”
The lead lasted until Valeri Kamensky tied it at 14:12 off a perfect cross-ice pass from linemate Alexandre Daigle. Kamensky one-timed it past Boston goalie Byron Dafoe.
Hlavac, whose wife Marika will undergo induced labor on Saturday with the couple’s first child, put the Rangers ahead to stay at 17:17 on a power play when Bourque made an uncharacteristic unforced turnover in the Bruins’ zone.
Edmonton 2, Pittsburgh 2--Todd Marchant and Roman Hamrlik scored in the third period as the Oilers rallied to a tie with the Penguins at Pittsburgh.
Martin Straka tied a team record by scoring twice in seven seconds in the first period for Pittsburgh, which had its four-game winning streak stopped.
San Jose 3, Atlanta 0--Steve Shields, who has struggled since Mike Vernon was traded by the Sharks, stopped 24 shots for his third shutout of the season as the Sharks won at Atlanta.
Shields is only 5-9-2 since the Sharks dealt Vernon to the Florida Panthers on Dec. 30. But Shields was perfect against the low-scoring Thrashers, making several nice stops in the opening period and handing the Thrashers their eighth shutout loss.
Ottawa 5, Florida 3--Jason York, Radek Bonk and Shawn McEachern scored in a span of less than three minutes in the third period as the Senators rallied from a 3-2 deficit to win at Kanatta, Ontario. Pavel Bure had a goal and an assist for the Panthers.
