Savvy Smiles

I had to smile when I read the article “Becoming Culturally Savvy Before Leaving Home” (Youth Beat, Feb. 13). The author described being stared at by individuals and groups.

When I travel, I learn, at the very least, how to say “hello” and “thank you” in the native language.

I also take plastic spider rings and flower rings to give to parents for their children. They are lightweight, cheap and fun to hand out. Adults also like them. I’ve taken to carrying them in the United States also, and they can stop a child’s tears like magic!

If I don’t speak the language, “a smile has no accent” is a helpful reminder.
