4.4 Quake Jolts Southland
A moderate earthquake, measuring magnitude 4.4, shook an area early Monday in the Inland Empire centering on Loma Linda, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The 5:49 a.m. temblor, nine miles down, caused neither damage nor injuries. But it was felt as far west as Los Angeles, south to San Diego, east to the Salton Sea and north through the Mojave Desert.
Maps issued by Caltech and the Geological Survey showed that the strongest shaking was in a triangular area about 15 miles on a side bounded by San Bernardino, Redlands and Riverside.
Some sleepers were awakened, some liquids spilled, small objects displaced or upset, doors swung open and closed, pictures moved and some pendulum clocks were disrupted.
The quake was near the important San Jacinto fault, though Geological Survey seismologist Sue Hough said it was not immediately determined whether it was on that fault or on a smaller one nearby.
Hough said the temblor was not an aftershock of any other jolt, but a new quake.
