UCLA Storms Back Against Pepperdine
Pepperdine jumped out to an early lead against freshman pitcher Mike Kunes, but UCLA came back to win a nonconference baseball game, 11-7, Tuesday at UCLA.
Greg Ramirez, a Pepperdine freshman from Rio Mesa High, gave up six runs in 2 2/3 innings.
Pepperdine (5-7) scored four runs in the first inning off Kunes, including a three-run home run by All-American Dane Sardinha.
Kunes, a two-time City player of the year from Chatsworth High, gave up five earned runs in his first college start.
Alemany High graduate Bill Scott hit a home run for the Bruins (7-5), ranked No. 8 in the nation.
Tony Garcia had a triple and scored twice for the Waves.
UC Santa Barbara 4, CS Northridge 2--Troy Kinto (2-0) scattered four hits and struck out 10 in 7 2/3 innings for the Gauchos in a nonconference game at Northridge.
Adrian Mendoza, a senior first baseman from Royal High, went two for two for the Matadors (4-6).
Freshman Bill Murphy allowed one earned run in six innings while striking out six for Northridge. Reliever Merrill Dunn allowed one hit and one run in three innings.
Donovan Warrecker had two hits, including a solo home run for the Gauchos (7-4).
Cerritos 8, Pierce 1--Jarred Penwarden’s run-scoring double provided an early 1-0 lead but the Brahmas were buried in a nonconference game at Cerritos.
Doug Slaten pitched five scoreless innings for Pierce (3-3), allowing four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Jack Cassel (0-1) replaced Slaten and allowed four runs in the sixth.
The Master’s 3, Northwest Nazarene 0--Mike Ploharz allowed seven hits and struck out 10 for the Mustangs (9-3) in a nonconference game at The Master’s, giving Coach Monte Brooks his 101st victory.
