Camarillo Starts Fast Before Fading Against Lynwood
The surprising season of the Camarillo High girls’ basketball team came to an end Saturday night, but not without a fight.
The Scorpions led No. 2-seeded Lynwood, 8-5, after the first quarter, but the Knights’ physical play eventually proved the difference in a 46-34 victory in a Southern Section Division I-AA quarterfinal at Lynwood.
Lauren Ferriera scored 14 points for Camarillo (18-10), which was outscored, 28-13, in the second and third quarters. The Scorpions trailed at halftime, 18-12.
The Knights made 20 free throws and harassed Camarillo with pressure defense.
“Our girls didn’t adjust to the physical play of the game,” Coach John Harbour of Camarillo said.
LaConia Hatcher scored 13 points and Willnet Crockett added 10 for Lynwood (25-3).
DIVISION III-AA
Bishop Montgomery 85, Harvard-Westlake 56--Freshman Lauren Ervin had 23 points, nine rebounds and five steals for the Knights in a quarterfinal victory at Mira Costa.
Bishop Montgomery set the tone early, using a full-court, man-to-man press to produce eight steals in the first quarter. The Knights finished with 16 steals.
Reserve Daniella Butte scored 14 points and L’Tanya Robnett added 10 for Harvard-Westlake (22-8), which was outrebounded, 27-21.
Brooke Porter scored the Wolverines’ first seven points, but had only two the rest of the game.
Bishop Montgomery used a 16-2 run at the start of the second half to take a comfortable lead.
