HIGH SCHOOL NOTEBOOK
For the first time since 1980, no girls’ team from the region will appear in a Southern Section final.
Alemany, Harvard-Westlake, Newbury Park and Oak Park each lost division semifinals on Saturday, and Ventura and Buena were upset last week in third-round games.
During the 1990s, 34 teams from the region played for section championships and won 15 titles.
Alemany and Harvard-Westlake, Division III state finalists the last two seasons, are still alive, however.
They will open play in the eight-team Southern Regional on March 7, most likely against a champion from the San Diego, Central or Southern sections.
“That’s a long time in between games,” said Coach Brian Taylor of Harvard-Westlake, whose team will have had nine days off between games. “I’m giving the girls a couple of days off before we get going again.”
