Gwynn’s Son Picks Fullerton

Anthony Gwynn, the son of the San Diego Padres’ Tony Gwynn, said Monday he has made an oral commitment to play baseball for Cal State Fullerton and will sign with the Titans during the next signing period in April.

Gwynn said he chose Fullerton over San Diego State, his father’s alma mater. San Diego State’s stadium is named for his father, who played baseball and basketball for the Aztecs. Tony Gwynn is an eight-time National League batting champion.

“It was a very difficult decision, but I thought there would be less pressure for me [at Fullerton], and different scenery,” Anthony Gwynn said. “I almost made the commitment earlier.”

Gwynn, an outfielder, plays basketball as well as baseball for Poway High. He batted .400 last season as a junior center fielder.

Gwynn said he expects to be drafted. “I’m pretty much committed to college, unless the money would be so huge that no normal person could turn it down,” he said.
