TUCSON — A team from the Toluca Tennis Club, representing Southern California, defeated a team from San Francisco, 4-1, to win the U.S. Tennis Assn. adult league national championship Sunday.
Producer Jim Wilson led the Toluca Lake squad through three days of playoffs to win the USTA’s 4.5 level, which draws many former college players and teaching pros.
Wilson and his doubles partner, La Crescenta dentist James Kanda, won all five of their weekend matches, while Brandon L’Heureux won all four of his matches at No. 2 singles. The team’s top singles player, French producer Lawrence Hatchwell, now of Studio City, overcame a bout with flu to best San Francisco’s No. 1 singles player in the title match.
The national final was to be played in Mobile, Ala., last October but was canceled because of torrential rain. It was later rescheduled for this past weekend in Tucson.
