Re “NBC, NAACP in Pact to Boost Minorities in TV,” Jan. 6:
According to executive producer Paris Barclay, the desperately needed changes to the cultural landscape of network television are being dubbed “bold and courageous.” How about “long overdue”? While segregation practices ended in theory decades ago and civil rights and affirmative action issues have made great strides, the entertainment industry continues unabashedly its Jim Crow customs. As we enter this new millennium, let us hope the proposed changes truly come to pass. Children of diversity and their families should not have to wait another millennium to become visible and positively portrayed on the TV screen.
