* Adam Gray-Hayward, a receiver for St. Bonaventure High, has committed to San Diego State.

Gray-Hayward, a Times’ All-Ventura County selection, set a school record with 19 touchdown receptions last season for the Seraphs (14-0), who won the Southern Section Division XI championship.

Gray-Hayward, who might also punt for San Diego State, chose the Aztecs over Navy and Utah State.

* Scott Arnold, a Times’ All-Valley offensive lineman from Canyon, has committed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

* Chris St. John, an assistant coach at Notre Dame High, has resigned to become a student assistant at Florida State, helping coach the defensive line.

VOLLEYBALL

* UCLA freshman Richard Nelson, a setter from Alemany High, played extensively in three matches at the UC Irvine tournament last weekend.

Nelson had 106 assists as the Bruins (3-0) defeated UC Irvine, Pacific and No. 1-ranked Long Beach State.

Nelson started against Long Beach State in place of All-American Brandon Taliaferro, who was out with a back injury.

BASEBALL

* Jonathan Higashi, a senior catcher at Chaminade, has committed to Loyola Marymount. He was an All-Southern Section Division IV selection last season.
