Burroughs’ girls had lost 10 consecutive Foothill League games to Hart before a 55-44 victory on Friday night.

“It was like a big weight lifted off all of our shoulders,” Coach Doug Nicol said.

Burroughs was a perennial runner-up to Hart until last season, when Burroughs missed the playoffs for the first time in 15 seasons.

Thanks to a scheduling quirk, the Indians are in position to take control of the league race, playing each team at Burroughs in the first round of league play.

That wacky Marmonte League is at it again.

Newbury Park and Royal emerged from the winter break as solid favorites to contend for the girls’ championship. Then league play began.

Newbury Park (12-4) escaped with a 49-47 victory over Agoura (10-7) on Wednesday, and Royal (10-5) lost to Agoura, 54-45, on Friday. Moorpark (9-6) routed Westlake, 61-36, in its opener, but lost to Thousand Oaks, 53-45, in its second league game.

“All seven teams in this league can beat any of the others,” Coach Dave Murphy of Simi Valley (11-4) said.
