Estella D. Pannell; Community Volunteer

Estella D. Pannell, a homemaker and volunteer, died Saturday at a Ventura convalescent hospital after a lengthy illness. She was 95.

She was born Dec. 17, 1904, in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma. After growing up in Oklahoma she married Timothy Pannell, and the couple moved to Ventura in 1926.

Her husband had taught himself to play the fiddle and later taught her to play the guitar. The couple were charter members of the California State Old Time Fiddlers Assn. Later, she was presented a certificate of appreciation for her participation in founding the association’s District 8.

She also enjoyed volunteering in the community. In 1983, she was presented a certificate of appreciation and recognized by the Ventura County Public Social Services Agency for her volunteer service to senior citizens. In 1985, the agency’s Senior Nutrition Program gave her a certificate of appreciation for four years of service. She was also honored for volunteering at the Ventura Avenue Adult Senior Center in 1991.

Pannell is survived by her daughter, Mary Helen Boles of San Diego, and a granddaughter, Sally Boles of San Diego.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years.

Services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ted Mayr Funeral Home, Ventura, which is handling the arrangements. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.
