Connecticut Stays in Control

Top-ranked Connecticut, coming off a victory over No. 2 Tennessee on Saturday, showed few signs of a letdown in a 75-35 Big East women’s basketball victory over West Virginia Wednesday night at Storrs, Conn.

Asjha Jones led the Huskies (13-0, 3-0 Big East) with 14 points. Swin Cash had eight of her 12 points for Connecticut in a 10-0 opening run.

West Virginia (5-9, 0-4 Big East) shot only 21% and was outrebounded, 50-30. Darya Kudrayvtseva, a childhood teammate of Connecticut All-American Svetlana Abrosimova, led the Mountaineers with eight points. It was the first time the Russians had seen each other in nearly three years, and despite the lopsided score, their reunion was a happy one. “I told her how much I appreciated her effort and for what she represents to Russia,” Kudrayvtseva said. Abrosimova finished with 10 points.

No. 9 Rutgers 60, Georgetown 48--Shawnetta Stewart scored a game-high 15 points, and Tammy Sutton-Brown had 11 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Scarlet Knights (11-2, 4-0 Big East) at Washington. Georgetown (7-7, 1-3), which has played four consecutive games against ranked teams, missed its first 12 field-goal attempts.

No. 16 Texas Tech 75, Colorado 50--Plenette Pierson scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Lady Raiders at Lubbock, Texas. Keitha Dickerson added 15 points and Katrisa O’Neal had 14 for Texas Tech (12-2, 1-2), which never trailed Colorado (5-8, 0-2). Kami Carmann led Colorado with 12 points.

No. 25 Boston College 67, St. John’s 50--Becky Gottstein and Alissa Murphy each had 17 points to lead the Golden Eagles at Boston. Boston College (14-3, 3-0 Big East) set a school record by winning its 10th in a row. Latasha Thompson had 23 points to lead St. John’s (5-9, 0-4).
