Groundbreaking Planned for Garden

A groundbreaking ceremony for a new community garden and an open house for the North Hollywood High School Naturalist Academy will be held Saturday.

Students in the four-year academy, which was started last fall, learn about large- and small-scale planting, propagation and observe the life cycles of plants and animals.

The campus has a botanical garden, vegetable garden, greenhouse and potting room, among other amenities.

Classes are held outside as weather permits.

Students have been weeding and cleaning up the area designated for the community garden, which will put student gardeners side-by-side with local residents.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the garden will begin at 11 a.m., followed by the open house for prospective students at 1 p.m. Activities will take place where Weddington Street ends at North Hollywood High School, three blocks east of Laurel Canyon Boulevard.
