A Long Beach man suspected of shooting two mourners at his infant daughter’s funeral in Cypress surrendered to police Thursday, authorities said.
Police booked Siraj Leyerle, 21, on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after he gave himself up at the Cypress Police Department, Lt. Mike Idom said. The motive for the attack was still unclear, he said.
Leyerle’s bail was set at $250,000, and his arraignment was scheduled for today.
The suspect’s 6-week-old daughter, who authorities said died of sudden infant death syndrome, was buried Tuesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery on Lincoln Avenue.
Just as the service ended, a scuffle broke out between family members, and Leyerle allegedly shot the baby’s 23-year-old aunt in the left elbow and 30-year-old uncle in the foot, Idom said.
Officials with the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said the infant’s death is not under investigation.
