Plea Entered in Explosive Devices Case

A Van Nuys man arrested last week after police found large quantities of ammonium nitrate and other explosives in his garage pleaded not guilty Tuesday to two felony charges of possessing explosives.

Raymond Oberg, a 75-year-old retired pyrotechnist, was arrested last Thursday after a worker at a private postal store reported a suspicious object amid packing materials that Oberg had brought in for recycling.

Police said they found explosives at Oberg’s house and evacuated about 60 homes in his neighborhood for about nine hours.

Oberg faces one felony count for possession of an explosive and a second count for possession of a destructive device in or near a private home. He was released on his own recognizance.

If convicted on both charges, Oberg could face more than six years in state prison, said Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
