City officials are recommending the permanent closure of parts of two residential streets because of excessive traffic and unsafe conditions.

According to a report released by the city Engineering Department, the closure of Brooklyn and Wabash avenues at various points to block through traffic “will cause a minor increase in travel time, delay and inconvenience, but will most definitely improve the quality of life to residents on those streets.”

The city plans to set up swinging metal bars to block traffic at various points along both streets. The bars would be locked together, but fire, police and ambulance workers would have keys to open them if needed. Residents would still have access to their homes, but might have to make a detour around a gate to get to their part of the street.
