In your article about the Los Angeles Philharmonic, you quoted Betty Freemen, who I know is a great contributor and supporter of the arts (“Orchestra’s Outlook Is Sunny but Hazy,” by Elaine Dutka, Jan. 14).
However, she is way off when she says “on weekends, people go to the beach or just relax. No one wants to get on the freeways” and therefore weekend concerts aren’t feasible. I think she is very wrong.
We have exchanged our evening tickets for the L.A. Opera, the L.A. Philharmonic and the Mark Taper Forum for Saturday and Sunday matinees. It is much easier to get to the Music Center, believe me, on the weekend than struggling on freeway or surface roads to a 7 or 8 p.m. curtain.
I think Deborah Borda has a great idea. Good luck to her in Los Angeles from a former New Yorker.
