Prop. 22

Re Sheryl Hayashi’s Jan. 25 letter on Prop. 22: At present, no state, including California, permits same-sex marriage. If Prop. 22 fails, same-sex marriage will still be prohibited. If it passes, it merely closes a loophole that would compel California to recognize a same-sex marriage if such were legal in another state.

I believe that is too important an issue to be forced on Californians by such a back-door approach. Only Californians should decide whether or not we want same-sex marriages. To reach such a result in any other way is unfair and devious.

* We don’t understand this Prop. 22, “Protection of Marriage.” After almost 18 years of marriage, the two of us are still best friends. Our marriage doesn’t need any defending or protection. What on Earth is wrong with those people whose marriages need to be protected?
